Resus Rhythms

Poetry | Naas General Hospital | 1 August 2026

A poem from Resus on unexpected hospital stays, unpredictable heartbeats, and finding quiet faith.

The incessant beeping of alarms
Becomes more tiring today
For in the Resus room I am
No end to my dismay.

A heart rate high at home I felt
Blood pressure low it was
An ambulance we called to help
And thus to here it ‘twas.

A bear’s paw in my hand I’m glad
And Andrew’s too I know
I wish I knew why heart beats fast
As cables and tests grow.

The medication twice they gave
By mouth and then by blood
Reduces the heart rate and then
It shoots back up again.

A new ward and a place to stay
For now until who knows;
We’ll cross each bridge as we grow close
And weather what life throws.

Tomorrow’s bells will ring without
My footsteps in the aisle;
The prayers will rise, the psalms will lift,
Though I must rest awhile.

Yet even here in hospital light
Where midnight hums and sighs,
I trust the grace that keeps me held
By love that never dies.

And chaplains walk these corridors—
A quiet, steady crew;
If morning finds me needing prayer,
One’s likely passing through.

Written in the Resus room of Naas General Hospital.
