Celtic Compline

NeuroDivine Prayers banner in stained glass with Celtic knotwork.

Rooted in shelter, land, and the Holy Three

Celtic Compline on NeuroDivine.ie is shaped for quiet hearts and gentle endings. It draws on the ancient rhythms of Irish prayer — shelter, blessing, land, and the Holy Three — while remaining spacious and accessible for autistic and neurodivergent people.

We offer two forms of Compline:

Ferial Office

For ordinary evenings: calm, steady, simple. A companion for the end of a regular day. Ferial Compline.

Festal Office

For feast days, saints’ days, and nights of celebration. Richer in landscape, brighter in tone, and woven with the presence of the saints. Festal Compline.

Both offices share the same structure. Both are written for peace, grounding, and gentle rest. One is for the everyday. One is for the days that shine.

A note for those saying the office

You may sit, stand, kneel, curl up, or stay very still — choose whatever helps your body feel safe. If it helps, place a hand on your heart, your tummy, or something soft you like to hold.

Take a slow breath in… and let it out gently. Breathe in like you’re smelling something warm and comforting… Breathe out like you’re blowing a small cloud into the air.

You may make the sign of the cross if it helps you feel close to God. There is no right or wrong way to pray — let your body choose ease and peace.

Opening Sentence

The Holy Three encircle us:
Christ before us,
Spirit beside us,
Father watching over our sleep.

Stillness

A pause for slow breathing, as the night settles like a cloak.

Opening Prayer

Holy One of the quiet hours,
as the land folds into darkness
and the last light fades from hill and river,
gather us into Your peace.

Be the warmth at our hearth,
the guard at our door,
the calm within our breathing. Amen.

Hymn of Night Shelter

1.
Beneath Your wings, O Holy One,
we rest at close of day;
like dusk along the Barrow’s bend,
Your peace folds round our way.

2.
The shadow of Your steadfast love
is cairn and ancient stone;
a refuge shaped by whispered prayer,
where none must stand alone.

3.
As nightfall drapes the quiet fields
from Dunamaise to shore,
Your angels keep their gentle watch
at every humble door.

4.
No terror of the darkened hours,
no storm‑wind’s sudden cry
can break the calm your presence brings,
for You are ever nigh.

5.
So in the stillness of this night
our hearts in trust remain;
Your shelter holds the world in grace
till morning comes again.

Psalm 91 – NeuroDivine.ie

Responses

You are my harbour in the storm,
O God, my rock on the open plain.
In Your shadow I find rest;
in Your light I rise again.

Scripture

“The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”

Deuteronomy 33:27

Celtic Night Prayers

God of the pilgrim road,
guard us as we sleep.
Let Your angels stand at the four corners of our dwelling:
north, south, east, and west.

Christ of the thin places,
be near to all who wake,
all who watch,
all who weep.

Spirit of the hearth‑fire,
kindle peace within us,
and keep our dreams in Your care.

Bless the land that holds us,
the river that remembers us,
the fields that rest with us,
and the dawn that will greet us.

The Lord’s Prayer (optional)

Our Father…

Closing Blessing

May the Three who are over us,
the Three who are around us,
the Three who are within us,
bless us in our sleeping and guard us till the morning. Amen.

Stillness

A pause for slow breathing, as the night settles over hill, river, and holy ground.

Opening Prayer

Holy One of the saints and seasons,
as darkness folds over the wide plains of our world
and the last light fades from river and field,
gather us into Your radiant peace.

Be the flame at our hearth, as Brigid was;
the strength on our path, as Patrick walked;
the calm upon our dreaming, as Columba blessed the waves.
Hold us in the brightness of this holy night. Amen.
