About Michael

Michael McFarland Campbell is a writer, hymn writer, church musician, and communications professional living in County Kildare, Ireland.

He serves as a parish reader, organist, and churchwarden within the Church of Ireland and is a novice with the Community of St Benedict. His writing is rooted in Anglican spirituality, shaped by Benedictine values of prayer, hospitality, learning, and attentive presence, and inspired by the landscapes, churches, and pilgrimage traditions of Ireland and beyond.

Books & Creative Projects

Michael is the author of several books, including A Pilgrim’s Psalter of Earth and Light, A Living Cloud of Irish Witnesses, and two fiction series, The Church Is Open and The Circuit of Care. His work explores scripture, saints, pilgrimage, parish life, neurodiversity, chronic illness, and the search for holiness within ordinary experience.

Alongside NeuroDivine, Michael is involved in a number of related creative projects:

  • Pilgrim Light: A photography project exploring sacred places, landscapes, and the spiritual significance of ordinary moments.
  • Received Light: A collection of AI-assisted visual art inspired by themes of faith, prayer, pilgrimage, and imagination.
  • HIV Blogger: Reflections on life, health, resilience, fitness, and long-term wellbeing while living with HIV and kidney disease.
  • Heritage & Inclusion: Various writing, publishing, and advocacy projects connected with faith, inclusion, pilgrimage, and Irish life.

Faith in the Waiting Rooms

Living with autism, HIV, and long-term dialysis following kidney failure caused by Goodpasture Syndrome, Michael writes from the conviction that faith is not something reserved for life’s extraordinary moments.

Much of his work reflects the reality that God is present in waiting rooms, train journeys, dialysis chairs, parish halls, and everyday encounters, as surely as in cathedrals, monasteries, and places of pilgrimage. At the heart of all these activities lies a simple vocation: to help people discover traces of grace, meaning, and wonder in the places they already inhabit.

Professional Background & Personal Life

Professionally, Michael has worked in communications, governance, and the voluntary sector, including service with St John Ambulance Ireland. He is a Chartered Institute of Public Relations Accredited Practitioner and has extensive experience supporting charities, churches, and community organisations.

When not writing or working, Michael can often be found playing the organ, visiting churches and holy places, exploring railway journeys, photographing landscapes, or spending time with his husband Andrew and their cats, Richard and Niamh.
