In Gibraltar’s blaze bold Richard sprang,
A kitten crowned in flame;
His leap across the courtyard gap
Well worthy of his name.
The noon-heat rose in golden waves,
The white walls blinded bright;
He rode the shimmered breath of sun
As though sustained by light.
Two stories high above the stone,
He crossed the glowing span;
Had I not seen that lion-leap,
I’d doubt such wonder ran.
The windows closed as paws touched home,
The magic hid its gleam;
Yet Richard’s jump in furnace air
Burns like an ancient dream.
And now we look back, full of love,
a cat much larger now;
in Ireland’s cold and rainy land
he lifts his kingly brow.
