Before the Count

Transparency in church governance begins long before the count—with open invitations, clear paths, and informed choice.

Transparency must first begin
Before the counting can commence;
The truest safeguard of the vote
Is openness in every sense.

For governance within Christ's fold
Should neither favour nor withhold,
But welcome all whose hearts aspire
To offer service, skill and fire.

An open call, a willing word,
A listening Church where all are heard,
An informed choice, a faithful count:
These are the things that most amount.

So may Christ's Church learn well anew
To make her common pathways true;
That none need seek a hidden key
To share in holy ministry.

For gifts are given not to few,
But scattered wide the whole Church through;
And all should know, both great and small:
The Lord has room to welcome all.

Reflection: On Openness and Church Governance

Church governance is not merely an administrative necessity; it is a practical expression of our theology. How a church structures its elections, communicates eligibility, and invites participation reflects what it truly believes about the priesthood of all believers and the distribution of the Holy Spirit’s gifts.

When governance relies on default silence, unwritten rules, or closed familiar circles, it inadvertently creates a barrier where only those already “in the know” can navigate the path to service. True institutional transparency does not begin when the ballot box is opened to tally votes—it begins long before, in how openly the invitation to serve is extended, how clearly candidates are permitted to share their vision, and how equips voters to make informed choices based on discernment rather than mere name recognition.

When procedural pathways are clear, accessible, and welcoming to all, administration ceases to be a bureaucratic hurdle and becomes an act of stewardship—ensuring that every gift given to the community can be freely offered for the building up of the Church.
