Our Lady stands on Carmel’s height
As Kildare waits the promised morn;
Her mantle stirs the final winds
Where valerian through dusk is borne.

The wren keeps watch in trembling briar
While heavens shake with hidden flame;
She gathers souls like scattered seed
For Christ who calls each one by name.

When stars fall down like withered bloom
And moon and tide are torn apart,
Your Scapular becomes our shield—
A pledge no night can turn the heart.

Along the fen the bog‑myrtle
Breathes sweetness through the rising storm;
And swifts ascend like summoned saints
To meet the Lord when skies transform.

O Mother, guide us through the fire
That clears the fields of Erin’s earth;
Till Christ, the Dawn beyond all dawns,
Reveals the kingdom’s second birth.

Then lead us home to mansions bright
Prepared before the world began;
And keep us in your steadfast love
Till all is healed in God’s great plan.

A Feast Day Reflection

16 July — The Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

On this Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, through my new hymn, I offer a sanctuary where the lofty heights of Carmelite contemplation meet the sweet, damp earth of Ireland. By bridging Mount Carmel with Kildare, the poem reminds us that Mary’s mantle is not distant; it stirs in our everyday storms, breathing the sweetness of bog-myrtle and valerian into the fens of our lives. The natural imagery—from the silent, vigilant watch of the wren in the briar to the soaring ascent of the swifts—perfectly mirrors the quiet, deep interior life of a Carmelite. It is a stunning tribute to a ministry that quietly gathers scattered souls, standing as a faithful witness to Christ’s healing love.

At the heart of today’s feast is the Scapular, celebrated here as a powerful shield of hope: “a pledge no night can overthrow the heart.” In the face of life’s clearing fires and rising storms, Mary’s protective garment is a tangible promise of shelter and grace. This reflection is ultimately a prayer of profound gratitude for those who minister in her spirit—guiding souls through the darkness, anchoring them in steadfast love, and pointing them toward the horizon where Christ, the “Dawn beyond all dawns,” waits to lead us home.
