The heron keeps its vigil still
beside the morning stream;
a lone, grey monk in quiet light
who guards the waking dream.
The owl that held the midnight hours
now slips through branch and briar;
its silence leaves a blessing soft
as ash from incense fire.
The rooks in dark, familiar trees
begin their ragged psalm;
their cawing turns to chant and prayer
that steadies all the calm.
A goldcrest flickers through the leaves,
a spark of living gold;
he whispers of the Bread of Life,
a mystery to hold.
The swifts in sudden arcs of joy
cut through the cloistered air;
they trace the shape of gratitude
and stitch a heart to prayer.
So thanks be given for these guides
within this Irish green;
their feathered liturgy reveals
God’s peace in all that’s seen.
