O Wisdom, Light That Does Not Fade

A quiet All Saints hymn for the weary, the unseen, and those who walk beyond labels.

Saints | All Saints’ Day | 1 November

A Second Hymn for the Feast of All Saints

Earlier this week, we walked with the saints along the winding roads and hedgerows, celebrating the enduring resilience of the pilgrim band. Today, for the quiet close of the feast, here is a companion hymn for the hidden, the weary, and the unseen at the table.

O Wisdom, light that does not fade,
No harsh or hurried flame,
You seek the souls that make you room,
And call them each by name.

2.
Across Slieve Bloom's enduring slopes,
Beside the Shannon's flow,
You walk with those whose weary feet
Still choose the path to go.

3.
The curlew's cry on evening air,
The salmon's silver run,
Proclaim your care for hidden saints
Whose race is never done.

4.
The cloud that wrapped the mountain's height
Still folds your people round;
In weakness, silence, pain, and loss,
Your steady grace is found.

5.
Among the pines the goldcrest moves,
Its crown a gleam of gold;
A sign that Christ still feeds his own
Through gifts both small and old.

6.
Where lonely tables stand apart,
And absent voices grieve,
You sit beside the hidden guest
Whom others scarcely see.

7.
When labour seems to fade away,
And strength is running low,
You bless the work of faithful hands
More deeply than they know.

8.
The cloak is worn through wind and rain,
By Barrow, bog, and shore;
Yet those who walk in faithful hope
Find you for evermore.

9.
No diagnosis marks the soul,
No label tells its worth;
For Christ is known within the cloud
That veils and fills the earth.

10.
So may we dwell within your light,
Its brightness never dim;
Clothed in your peace, companioned well,
We live and rest in him.
