The Swapped Bells

The dialysis ward runs well,
Or so we'd always say,
Yet something strange has happened now,
To throw good sense away.

When I press mine to seek some help,
Its ringing's heard next door,
While when my neighbour calls the staff,
It sounds outside my door.

The nurses hurry to the sound,
But find the patient wrong,
Then turn around and try again,
Their journey twice as long.

A bell should tell them where to go,
That seems a modest task,
Yet now these wandering signals stray,
And leave the staff to ask.

It's new to all upon the ward,
No one has seen its like,
A little fault in wiring, p'r'aps,
Or some electronic strike.

We laugh a bit, as patients do,
Though chaos does impend,
For bells are meant to summon help,
Not send staff round the bend.

So may the muddled bells be fixed,
And order soon restored,
That every call is heard aright,
Throughout the dialysis ward.

Written in dialysis today.
