October's come, yet here am I
Still walking round in shorts;
Through Midland streets and winding paths,
Ignoring autumn's courts.
The leaves declare that summer's gone,
The swallows southward steer;
Yet somehow I am dressed for June,
And perfectly sincere.
I caught my image in a pane
While passing through the town;
I thought, "That fellow's looking well."
Then laughed. It was my own.
Shoulders gained three centimetres,
My chest acquirèd five;
My biceps added more besides,
And seem quite pleased to thrive.
At near to fifty, who'd have thought
Such things would still occur?
My shirts appear a touch concerned,
Their buttons less secure.
The cause is not a mystery,
Nor difficult to see;
I eat far better than I did,
And train persistently.
Each dose of medicine I take,
Not skipped, delayed, or missed;
It turns out doctors sometimes know
Exactly what they list.
So here I stride these autumn days,
Past terrace, tree, and cart;
A dialysis machine may help,
But grit still plays its part.
The Midlands wears its autumn cloak,
As leaves begin to part;
And I’m the fool in shorts who walks
With summer in his heart.
