Romans 1 is one of those passages many Christians think they already know.

It is quoted frequently in discussions about gay Christians, often in fragments and often with great certainty. For some of us, it has not simply been interpreted; it has been used against us.

Before and After “Therefore” grew from returning to the chapter slowly through the practice of Lectio Divina: reading, pausing, listening, returning, and noticing.

The booklet does not attempt to offer a complete academic commentary. It is a short, prayerful reflection on the importance of context, the danger of judgement, and what becomes visible when we resist the urge to begin at the verses most often quoted.

It is also written for those who have been told that their faith, bodies, or relationships place them beyond the grace of God.

The booklet concludes with a prayer for those wounded by condemnatory readings of Scripture and a blessing rooted in the promise that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
