Hymn and Reflection | World Day of the Sick | 11 February 2026

Holy ground is not confined to distant shrines. Sometimes it is found beside a hospital bed, within a dialysis unit, or in the fragile space between fear and trust.

The World Day of the Sick is a day of prayer for those who are unwell, those who care for them, and all who live with the uncertainty, weariness, and altered rhythms of illness.

For many, the day is closely associated with Lourdes. Pilgrims gather at the grotto, pray beside the spring, and walk together in candlelit procession. Yet many people living with illness cannot make such a journey. Our pilgrimages may take place in quieter and less expected surroundings: hospital wards, dialysis units, care homes, or our own homes.

My own experience is shaped by the steady rhythm of dialysis three times each week: the hum of the machines, the long hours in the chair, and the faithful work of simply arriving and beginning again. I cannot always travel on pilgrimage in the ordinary sense, but I have learned that pilgrimage can also happen within the heart.

Saint Brigid’s sheltering cloak and the healing hope associated with Our Lady of Lourdes remind us that holiness is not limited by geography. God comes near wherever compassion is offered, suffering is acknowledged, and hope is kept alive.

Sometimes holy ground is a dialysis chair.
Sometimes it is a bedside.
Sometimes it is the fragile space between fear and trust.

This hymn is offered as a prayer for all who are ill, all who care for them, and all who walk weary or uncertain paths. It carries, too, my quiet hope that, in God’s time, the possibility of transplantation may open a way towards renewed strength.

Whatever comes, Christ walks with us still.

Whose quiet courage shines;
Let hope flow like the Barrow’s course
Through all our tangled lines.

O Christ, whose cross and rising light
Renew the world again,
Hold every soul in endless love—
Our Healer, Lord, and Friend.
