Written for Candlemas (The Presentation of the Lord), this hymn celebrates Christ as the Light of the nations at the turning of the year. Drawing on the witness of Simeon and Anna, and set within the landscape and seasonal rhythms of Ireland, it weaves biblical faith with themes of light, hope, and patient renewal.

Christ is carried to the temple

Christ is carried to the temple,
Light within our winter’s frame;
Brigid’s fire and Mary’s tending
meet within the Holy Name.
Slemish shadows, Trostan’s ridges,
wait for spring’s returning glow;
Candles rise in quiet churches,
blessing warmth on fields below.

Ancient stones recall the promise,
paths our foremothers once trod;
Simeon’s joy and Anna’s witness
name the nearness of our God.
River Barrow, Lagan waters,
gleam with hope the dawn makes clear;
Christ, the Light for all the nations,
stirs the land from winter’s fear.

Bless the hands that bear this radiance,
bless the homes these flames will grace;
kindle courage for the journey,
shape our hearts with patient pace.
As the year turns toward its greening,
keep us faithful, keep us true;
Light of God, in Christ made present,
guide this island into You.
