August 16th marks the commemoration of Charles Inglis, a remarkable figure in the history of the Anglican Communion and a proud son of Glencolumbkille, County Donegal. Born into the rectory of the Diocese of Raphoe, Inglis carried the faith of the Church of Ireland across the Atlantic, serving first at Trinity Church in New York before becoming the first bishop of Nova Scotia—and notably, the first bishop consecrated overseas in the British Empire in 1787.

Each August, the Church in Glencolumbkille honours his pioneering spirit, a legacy that continues to inspire. His story is a testament to the enduring connection between Ireland and the Anglican Church in Canada, especially in the Maritimes and French-speaking regions.

As we give thanks for Bishop Inglis, we also remember the many Irish men and women who have gone forth from the Church of Ireland to serve the wider Anglican Communion. Their ministries have laid foundations of faith, worship, and community in lands far from home.
